Nancy Kantra is Professor of Dance at the University of the Arts where, as Head of Dance and Movement in the Brind School of Theater Arts, she has been teaching and choreographing students in varied disciplines since 1983. In addition to her work at UArts Ms Kantra has been Artistic Director of Penn Dance at the University of Pennsylvania, Faculty/Choreographer for the Gwendolyn Bye Professional Children’s School and fusion 2 Dance Company and teaches for many local colleges, dance studios and companies including Philadanco where she was a soloist from 1978-1985.
A Philadelphia native, Ms Kantra first studied with Thomas Cannon of the Littlefield Ballet Company and later at the Philadelphia Dance Academy, Pennsylvania Ballet and Dance Theater of Harlem. Ms Kantra’s performance credits include dancing for choreographers Talley Beatty, Rudolph Nureyev, Louis Johnson, Pearl Primus, Billy Wilson, Gene Hill Sagan and Twyla Tharp. Ms Kantra’s recent choreographic credits include: On Your Toes, Have A Nice Life (Edinburgh and New York Fringe Festivals; Into the Woods (Merriam Theater) and The Cradle Will Rock (Carnegie Mellon, ACTF Production). Ms Kantra has been recognized for choreographic excellence by the Barrymore Awards Committee and the American College Theater Festival. Who’s Who in American College Teachers and the Girl Scouts of America have honored her for her excellence in teaching and commitment to the instruction of young women in Philadelphia. Ms Kantra holds degrees from the University of Colorado and UArts and is a Movement Analyst certified through the Laban Institute of Movement in New York.
